LYNN COX, M.S., M.A.

Lynn CoxLynn Cox is a graduate of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. She earned a Master of Arts degree in Education from Pepperdine University and a Masters of Science in Physical Education from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Her 36-year teaching career encompasses grade levels of pre-school through college. She has coached both women and men’s tennis teams.

As an Adaptive Physical Education Specialist for the last 22 years, Lynn holds a teaching endorsement in Health and Physical Education from the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of California. She currently teaches in a non-graded, non-profit, private school in Northern Virginia for students with learning disabilities. Since 1995, she has incorporated Brain GymŽ movements daily in her classes to empower her students to learn and achieve their goals through a stress free environment.

Lynn is certified by the Educational Kinesiology Foundation to teach Brain GymŽ Core Course and provide private consultant services. She has experience in making presentations to professional colleagues and graduate level education classes. Lynn is a founding member of Kinesthetic Learning, Inc., has served as Secretary for the organization, and is presently Treasurer.

ALICE KRUM, B.A.

Alice KrumAlice Krum is a graduate of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education. She has been teaching English as a Second Language for over 23 years to kindergartners through adults in Virginia and California. She taught Spanish and French at George Mason Junior-Senior High School in Falls Church, Virginia for eleven years.

Since 1995, Alice has been using Brain GymŽ with all her students to activate learning readiness, increase motivation, reduce stress and improve confidence and self-esteem. She is the Brain GymŽ Instructor/Consultant for teachers in the Arlington, Virginia Public Schools.

Alice Krum is certified by the Educational Kinesiology Foundation of North America and is licensed to teach the Brain GymŽ Core Course and consult privately. She facilitates workshops for teachers and parents as well as providing private consultations in English or Spanish. She is trained in Touch For Health, Infinity Walk, and Bal-A-Vis-XŽ, CranioScaral Therapy and is a Reiki practioner. Alice also shares essential oils with all who are interested. As a founding member of Kinesthetic Learning, Inc. she presently serves in the position of Vice President.

JUDY METCALF, B.S.

Judy MetcalfJudy Metcalf is a graduate of the University of Nebraska and currently holds a Bachelor of Science with a teaching endorsement in Health and Physical Education from the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a physical educator with 15 years experience, she discovered Brain GymŽ in 1986. During the remaining 10 years of her career in physical education she used these activities to help her students move to learn.

She is licensed by Brain Gym International/Educational Kinesiology Foundation to teach Brain GymŽ 101, Movement Dynamics, Brain Organization Profiles, VisionCircles and Giving Back Mentoring. Judy co-founded the Washington DC Area Educational Kinesiology Network and is organizer and President of Kinesthetic Learning, Inc, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a strong foundation for learning through movement. She is available for introductory presentations, courses and private consultations and can be reached on the move at 4info@kinlearn.org. She is presently exploring the educational program of EM Technologies, Inc., where students learn the importance of effective microorganisms (EM) in daily maintenance of the environment. She resides in Lawrence, Kansas at Delaware Street Commons Co-Housing where she is a life long learner. When she returns to the D.C. metropolitan area, her visits are filled with kinesthetic activities.

SHIRLEY MIEKKA, Ph.D.

Shirley Miekka, Ph.D., earned a B.S. degree in Pharmacy from the University of Michigan and a doctorate in Physiological Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin. After a four-year postdoctoral position in Bern, Switzerland, she spent 26 years as biomedical research scientist with a Washington DC-based nonprofit organization, where she worked to improve the purity, safety and delivery of biotherapeutic products. As a Scientific Director for a biotechnology company she conducted research into blood product safety, and then worked as Senior Scientist in a small company devoted to wound healing technologies. She is principal author/inventor on over 30 scientific articles and 10 patents. Now retired, her attention is focused on learning modalities and the healing arts.

Shirley first learned Brain GymŽ in 1990, and in 1991 was licensed as a Brain Gym Instructor/Consultant by the Educational Kinesiology Foundation (Brain Gym International). She teaches Brain Gym 101 and facilitates individual sessions to help recipients access their innate easy learning ability and achieve their goals. As a founding member of Kinesthetic Learning, she has served as Treasurer and Board member and is currently Recording Officer. She was creator/co-author of the newsletter Brain Gym Matters and holds monthly Brain Gym Evenings in her home in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Shirley has long been interested in the physiology of learning and holistic approaches to health, which led her to study Touch for Health, Bio-Energy, Therapeutic Touch and Reiki. In 2008 she is building her dream house in Costa Rica, and she plans to travel regularly between her homes in Gaithersburg and Central America. Her next project is to create and build a Learning and Wellness Center on her Costa Rican property, which has beautiful vistas of the ocean, mountains and forests. (Projected opening date of the Center is January 2010).

MARGARET CANDLER, B.A.

Margaret Candler holds a B.A. degree from Radcliffe College and University of New England, Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. She is a licensed Brain GymŽ Instructor/Consultant. Margaret is certified by the Educational Kinesiology Foundation of North America to teach Brain GymŽ 101 and Mental Fitness Plus for Seniors. She has a background in family planning, crisis counseling , and middle school and high school teaching. She recently completed eight years of child welfare work with the Maryland Department of Social Services, where she saw the impact of stress on families. Since retiring from DSS, she has used Edu-K with children and adults, seniors, and individuals with special needs. She holds a free monthly introduction/support group on Brain GymŽ in her Annapolis, Maryland home.

Margaret is a founding member of Kinesthetic Learning, Inc. She serves on the Finance Committee and the task force for seniors. She says that Edu-K is the door to life experiences that she never thought were possible for her. Her understanding of Edu-K has been deepened and enriched by acupuncture, a year of weekly Alexander Technique lessons, Reiki, Yoga, a meditation practice under the guidance of a personal teacher and by taking off her glasses.

Margaret represents Annapolis Friends Meeting (Quakers) on the board of directors of The Light House homeless shelter in Annapolis. She is currently secretary of the board. She is a member of the Meeting's Outreach Committee and is an active participant in a study group on non-violence. Margaret and her husband Will vacation with children, grandchildren, friends and other relatives at their summer home in Cornwall, England. There they love short board surfing and walking the cliff paths.

GINNY KOENIG, B.S.

Ginny Koenig graduated from Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She worked for 7 years as an instructional assistant, taught Kindergarten for 8 years and has been enjoying substitute teaching, all in Fairfax County elementary schools. Her teaching experience also extends to fairy tale drama classes and health food cooking.

She has an extensive and diverse background in volunteer work, including ushering at Wolf Trap Farm Park, host-parenting teens, participating in conflict resolution activities and fund-raising for the Children’s Friendship Project of Northern Ireland, sponsoring engaged couples at St. Mary’s in Fairfax Station and peer counseling at Northern Virginia Community College and HAVEN of Northern Virginia. Ginny studied flower essences with Richard Katz, founder, and Patricia Kaminski, co-director of the Flower Essence society. Her other interests are family, health, harmony, beauty and joie de vivre.

In 1996 she began her Brain GymŽ journey, which led her to becoming a licensed Brain GymŽ Instructor/Consultant. Ginny is a founding member of Kinesthetic Learning, Inc., where she serves as Volunteer co-ordinator and a member of the Finance and Marketing team. In addition to private sessions with children and adults, she also teaches Brain GymŽ 101 and introductory classes.

COLLEEN T. SMALL, M. S. (LD/ED/K-12/EC)

Colleen T. Small, a graduate of Virginia Polytechnical School and State University, completed her Masters at George Washington University. She holds endorsements to teach Learning Disabilities, Emotionally Challenged, Early Childhood Special Education, Collegiate Professional K-12. Currently employed by Fairfax County Schools, Fairfax, Virginia, working with special education students, Colleen's passion is presenting workshops about Brain GymŽ with a special focus on adaptations in the home and classroom.

She is a licensed by the Educational Kinesiology Foundation to teach Brain GymŽ 101 and Brain Organization Profiles. Additional workshops offered by Colleen include topics in the field of child development such as "Bold, Bashful or Busy...a guide to Temperments in Children age 3-5," "Guiding the Behaviors of Preschool Children," "Red Flags in Development," "Denver Developmental Screening Device including vision and hearing screening training" and "Peer Mediation for High School Students" in Fairfax County. An avid child and animal advocate, Colleen co-authored several articles for the National Center for Clinical Infant Programs professional journal, Zero to Three, and assisted in the development of the Indirect Language Workshop for parent groups offered by Fairfax County Schools.
